One Day. Seven Challenges. One Golden Flagpole.
There are plenty of reasons Wajer owners return to Ibiza every summer. Some come for the hidden coves and clear water. Others know exactly which beach restaurant they'll end up at by late afternoon. Whatever the plan, Ibiza remains one of Wajer's favorite places to spend time on the water.
For one day each summer, leisurely cruising gives way to something a little more competitive as owners gather for one of the longest-running traditions in the Wajer calendar: the Wajer Owners Challenge.
Now in its ninth edition, it's become far more than a rally on the water. It's a day built around everything Wajer owners enjoy about boating in Ibiza, with a little friendly rivalry thrown in for good measure.
The island becomes the course
Most days in Ibiza are unplanned. The Owners Challenge is different. Each crew receives its own route around the island, navigating between seven on-the-water challenges. Every team follows a different sequence, keeping the rally moving and ensuring the fleet naturally disperses around the coastline before crossing paths again throughout the day.
The challenges themselves are different every year, which is part of the appeal. Previous editions have seen owners tee off with biodegradable golf balls, reverse their Wajers through technical courses and weave through slalom challenges on the water.
This year brought another fresh set of surprises, each designed to test a different combination of skill, teamwork and good humor. For the first time, a live online leaderboard added another layer of excitement, with positions updating as each challenge was completed.
By mid-morning, Wajers were crisscrossing the waters around Ibiza. Crews compared notes as they passed, glanced across to see who was heading for the next checkpoint and disappeared around the headland before meeting again somewhere else later in the day.
The coveted Golden Flagpole
For a group of people who spend most of the day insisting they're "not that competitive," Wajer owners become surprisingly invested in one particular prize. It’s something you can't buy anywhere: the one and only Wajer Golden Flagpole.
The owners who top the leaderboard earn the right to fly it proudly from their Wajer for the season ahead before returning it to be defended at the following Owners Challenge. Alongside the Golden Flagpole, this year's winners also received an IWC Aquatimer Automatic watch - but around the fleet it's the Flagpole that carries the real bragging rights.
It doesn't take long before everyone’s competitive sides begin to show. Boats cross paths between checkpoints and the same question comes up again and again: "How are you getting on?" By the end of the afternoon, everyone has a story about the challenge they mastered, the one that caught them out or the handful of points that might have changed everything.
More than a competition
For Wajer, the Owners Challenge has never been about finding the most competitive owner: it's about creating another reason to spend a day on the water together.
Ibiza makes the perfect backdrop. Many Wajer owners are already cruising the island throughout the summer, so the Challenge feels less like a formal event and more like an annual reunion, bringing together owners in one of the Mediterranean's best boating destinations.

Nine editions later, the Wajer Owners Challenge has become a familiar part of the Mediterranean summer. Every year the format evolves, the challenges change and another crew earns the right to fly the Golden Flagpole.
As the fleet dispersed across Ibiza once again, the Golden Flagpole had found its new home for the season ahead, but the conversations about the day's closest moments were only just beginning.
